*Kou / Kaustav Majumdar (1987) is a contemporary artist and scenographer based in Germany, working between Berlin and Freiburg. His practice moves fluidly across live drawing, digital media, performance, and visual storytelling, often unfolding in public space and within cultural and music events. He has presented work at pop-up exhibitions across Germany and has created live visual interventions at events such as Wurzel Festival and Venice Design Week. In Berlin, he documented the city during a period of rapid construction, translating urban change into layered visual narratives. His work also includes Freiburg’s first live digital art mixing format, as well as commissioned hand-drawn city visuals for Café Ruef. His clients and collaborators include Electric Monday, DJs across Germany, and private collectors.

Neo Vividism — Capturing Time in Color

In Kaustav Majumdar’s practice, color operates as a carrier of memory, emotion, and light. Moving between realism and abstraction, the Indian-born artist transforms fleeting moments into vivid perceptual fields where clarity dissolves into sensation and structure gives way to intuition.

He calls this approach Neo Vividism—a framework he developed to describe how perception, time, and memory continuously overlap. His works often begin with recognizable fragments—a street, a reflection, a figure—before being disrupted, veiled, or reassembled through expressive layers of pigment. In this transformation, memory does not remain fixed; it refracts, fragments, and re-emerges as emotion.

Each gesture on the surface is immediate and physical, driven by instinct rather than premeditation. Color behaves less like representation and more like experience itself—shifting, vibrating, and colliding in ways that suggest multiple moments occurring at once. Time in his work is therefore non-linear and sensorial, shaped as much by feeling as by observation.

Majumdar’s practice places strong emphasis on abstraction as a method of perception. Objects are not treated as fixed forms but as constellations of material, light, environment, and presence. Translating these mental images into visual form becomes an act of reduction and reinterpretation—one that he approaches through storytelling.

Storytelling remains central to his artistic language. Whether through drawings, digital compositions, performance, or video, his work constructs narratives that extend beyond words. Rather than presenting fixed meanings, it proposes shifting perspectives, where lines and forms behave as perceptual events rather than boundaries. This fluidity invites viewers to engage more actively with what they see, allowing multiple readings of a single moment to coexist within the same image.

In this sense, Neo Vividism is both method and meditation: a practice of painting as remembering, and remembering as an unfolding of light.
